Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective @ The Denver Art Museum

This past weekend Hubby and I decided to enrich ourselves with some culture.  Denver is upping the Haute Couture ante by hosting the Yves Saint Laurent Retrospective at The Denver Art Museum (DAM).  The only other cities the exhibition has been to are Paris and Madrid.

Yes, you read that right.  As the exhibition website says:  Paris. Madrid. Denver.  Not three cities you'd usually put into the same category.  This exhibition features 200 couture outfits and quite a few videos and photographs that tell the story of Yves Saint Laurent's 40 year career.

The Exhibition Guide.

It was very cool to see YSL's style evolve from his time at Dior and the iconoclastic Beatnik Collection that ended up with his firing from the House of Dior to the Women's Tuxedo he pioneered to the unbelievable evening gowns inspired by the Paris Opera House.  One of the dresses is featured on the front of the program.  The video above is from Fashion TV and is the complete Final Show from 2002 in which many of these dresses were featured before YSL announced his retirement.

The gown featured is so beautiful and dramatic.

If you live in Colorado or are coming to visit then you must find your way to the DAM before July 8th.  Seeing all these beautiful outfits made me wonder if YSL cosmetics live up to name.  I've never tried anything from YSL other than the Touche Eclat which I liked but didn't LOVE the way so many women do.  This exhibition has inspired me to go visit Nordie's and see the colors and options for myself.  I may not be able to afford a Van Gogh tribute jacket that took over 600 man hours to create, but I can afford a lipstick and that's why I love beauty.
